OUR FIRST INNOVATION

Beer brewers and whisky distillers extract sugars from barley to ferment into alcohol. What’s left behind is a protein-rich biomass known as ‘brewers spent grain’ (BSG) or ‘draff’ as it’s known in the whisky world. Traditionally, these by- and co-products are either sent to landfills or repurposed for low-value uses like cattle feed or biogas.

At Arda, we’re changing that. We transform these spent grains into high-value materials—the first being New Grain™, a revolutionary, high-quality, leather-like material that bypasses the need for animal leather and its plastic-derived counterparts.

Unlike many other leather-like materials that depend on polyurethane (PU) or other plastics for durability, flexibility, or protective coatings, New Grain™ stands apart. Thanks to Arda's breakthrough chemistry, we can use proteins to replace plastics while mimicking the complex fibrous structure of animal proteins in leather using plant proteins instead.

Whether for fashion, automotive, furniture upholstery, or any other uses, New Grain™ is being developed to adapt to diverse applications, offering a high-performance material that can thrive in its scalability, style, and functionality.

OUR FIRST INNOVATION: NEW GRAINTMMaterial finishes

New Grain™ is Arda’s first breakthrough: a soft, durable, and adaptable material.

Highly customisable in colour, texture, and performance, New Grain™ brings beauty, versatility, and circularity to fashion, automotive, interiors, and beyond.

Compatible with roll-to-roll manufacturing, New Grain™ is designed for scale and can rival current materials on quality and price.

It is not an imitation — it is a new material language, designed for a more responsible future.

OUR FIRST INNOVATION: NEW GRAINTMPrototypes and collaborations

New Grain™ will be commercially available in late 2026.  We are in active development with key fashion and beverage brands at all stages from prototyping to commercial collection development.

Our first release was in partnership with BEEN London, where we created a custom snake texture using our proprietary New Grain™ formulation and applied it to their bestselling Millais bag in 2024. Earlier this year, we debuted our second product made with New Grain™ — the Calvert XL tote — marking another important step toward real-world integration of our material.

More collaborations are underway, and we’re just getting started.

OUR FIRST INNOVATION: NEW GRAINTMPrototypes and collaborations

Next up, a collaboration we did in 2024 with Beavertown—a Heineken-owned brewery in London.

We transformed Beavertown’s spent grains into a series of unique cardholders customised with Beavertown’s signature skull and bones branding laser-engraved onto the material.

While the cardholders are not for sale yet, they mark a unique selling point where Arda can craft materials and products for breweries, whisky distilleries, and their customers.

OUR FIRST INNOVATION: NEW GRAINTMMaterial development

Our team of scientists conduct rigorous tests, both in-house and with external partners, to ensure that our material meets the demands of different industries and the varied properties each requires.

To ensure we create high-performing and versatile materials, we are constantly working on improving our material so it reaches better characteristics across tensile strength, tear strength, flex, elongation, drape, abrasion resistance, hand feel, colour, scent, and more.
