How is New Grain™ made?
It all begins with the grain. Once the grain is harvested, brewers take in the raw barley grain and extract the sugar to make beer.
For every 100L of beer, there are 20kg of brewers' spent grain (BSG).
BSG is rich in protein and fibre, which is a key part of what we manipulate into new materials.
We produce formulations of BSG and planet-friendly ingredients to create our New Grain™ alternative leather.
New Grain™ can be finished in ways similar to animal leather.
Our material can have customised finishes, patterns, and colours. The colour of the material is naturally dark, so we don’t need to add any extra colourants! We have also developed a way to lighten the material so that a variety of colours can be applied.
Is New Grain™ commercially ready?
Not yet! We have started testing out New Grain™ in small products in-house, and are working hard to improve material performance.
