We source spent grain from breweries local to our London facility, as well as from major breweries and whisky distilleries across the UK and EU. Our process allows us to produce consistent, high-quality material from a variety of grain blends including barley, wheat, rice, and maize. This model supports local supply chains and helps brewers and distillers unlock new value from byproducts.

No. New Grain™ is made exclusively from bio-based components and additives. New Grain™ does not contain any bio-derived plastics, rubber, or synthetic binders, as the protein is the binder.

Our preliminary third-party verified LCA indicates an emissions intensity of under 2 kgCO₂e per m² when produced with a TENCEL or cotton backing. We are pursuing an updated third-party verified LCA in 2026.

New Grain™ is composed primarily of grain proteins, combined with plant-derived additives that enhance strength, softness, and durability. Plant-based and mineral pigments can be added for colour. Depending on the application, our protein material is typically combined with a bio-based backing textile such as lyocell, cotton knits, or canvas.

Thickness is customisable to the application, typically ranging from 0.8 mm to 1.5 mm inclusive of backing material.

We use plant-based and mineral pigments to produce New Grain™ in a wide range of colours including reds, yellows, greens, blues, and browns. Custom shades can be developed on request.

Texture is imparted through release papers, giving access to a wide range of options — from animal grain expressions to geometric and fabric-like finishes. Custom release papers can also be used to incorporate brand-specific textures, logos, and monograms.

We collaborate with brands and companies across fashion, footwear, automotive, interiors, beverages, and more — from limited edition collections to joint development projects and commercial supply agreements. There is no MOQ for New Grain™. We can currently supply material in sheets suited to everything from initial testing and prototyping through to commercial collections. 

Pricing depends on volume and the nature of the partnership — for example, a one-off project versus a long-term commercial collaboration. At scale, New Grain™ is designed to be price-competitive with both animal and polyurethane leathers.
